Life Coaching for Photographers - What Can It Do For You?

por | | 0 comments

As a photographer, have you ever wondered how having a life coach might benefit your work and home life?

Do you find yourself knowing what your want, but stop yourself from getting it?  Are you too afraid to say to yourself, never mind out loud, what you really, really want?   Then maybe life coaching is for you.  Having a life coach is like have a personal trainer for your life.

I got into coaching because my wife is a coach.  In fact, she's on the faculty of the Coaches Training Institute and the Center for Right Relationship.  As her spouse, I've taken advantage of the opportunity to take the fundamental training from both coaching schools.  It's had an enormous positive impact on my home and work life, and I can personally and whole-heartedly recommend having a coach.  Don't worry, my wife is not my coach.  I got my own.  You might benefit from having one, as well.

Here's a coaching question for you - the first of what I hope will become a weekly feature of this blog:
If money was not a concern, how would you most like to spend your time and energy?

Call me at (617) 327-9254 to schedule a free, no obligation 60-minute sample session.

Traditions - Mehndi (Henna)

por | | 0 comments

Traditions - Mehndi (Henna)Weddings in India are considered to be a sacred and sanctified ritual. A typical Indian wedding is 3 days long. Pre-celebrations and post celebrations, talk about a party! The Mehndi is one of the most important and fun pre-wedding rituals. Celebrated by the bride, family and her friends. Different regions of the country celebrate the ritual in a different way according to their own marriage customs, rituals, and culture.

Traditions - Mehndi (Henna) Image Via Hocus Pocus

Mehndi or Henna itself is eco-friendly. It is a natural tattoo paste, made from the roots of the Henna plant. Green Mehndi is ground to a fine paste. Mehndi is symbolically an important part of the Indian wedding. As Mehndi changes its colour from green to orange-red after application, so does a bride flower into her womanhood after marriage.

Here's a great article from I Love Indian on the Mehndi ceremony.

The ceremony is mostly held at bride's place or sometimes in a banquet hall on the eve of the marriage ceremony or few days before the marriage. On this occasion a professional henna designer or some relative applies mehendi to the bride's hands and feet. There are few places in India where it is a ritual that the first motif of henna or mehendi is applied by the bride's sister-in-law whereas there are some places where the first mehendi motif is said to be auspicious if applied by bride's mother.

The Mehendi or henna motif is not only the adoration of the bride rather it epitomizes her transformation from a virgin girl to a temptress for her husband. As per Kama Sutra, henna is one of the sixty four arts of women. Popular motifs of the bridal mehendi are conchshell, flowers, Kalash, peacock, doli and baraat patterns. The intricate motifs of the bridal henna also hide the husband's name. It is said that the husband's name in the intricate henna motifs is made for the groom who has to find out his name in his bride's mehendi as an evidence of his sharp eyes and active brain to impress his girl.

Mehendi function is usually organized with the sangeet function. So, it has a festive feel to it with the women dancing and singing traditional songs on the mehendi ritual. The bride is dressed in light color clothes with light jewelry. According to the custom the bride must not step out of the house after the mehendi ritual until the wedding day. It is believed that the darker and deeper the henna stains the more the husband and the in-laws will love her bride. The ritual of mehendi signifies the strength and power of love in a marriage so it is regarded good omen for the would-be bride. It is said that the long the bride retains the mehendi, the more auspicious would be her future.

Title: Shri Krishna - Banni Ko Byah (wedding song, bride mehndi)

A wedding song from Ramanand Sagar's epic television series Shri Krishna. The composition and lyrics are by Ravindra Jain, it is sung by Hemlata, and it describes the bridal "shingaar" (makeover) of Lord Krishna's mother Devaki. The song is a good example of the vibrant folk music and wedding traditions of India.

Mexican Spiked Egg Nog... Rompope

por | | 0 comments

Hot Mexican eggnog (rompope, pronounced rom-po'-pay)) is a delightful party hit! You flavor traditional Christmas eggnog with orange and cinnamon, spike it with brandy, and serve it hot. A crockpot will keep the rich concoction warm for the duration. Whip up this festive adult beverage in a flash for a memorable holiday fiesta.
Makes 6-8 servings.

Mexican Spiked Egg Nog... Rompope Things You'll Need:
  • crockpot
  • 1 quart eggnog
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated, fresh orange peel
  • 1 1/2 cups brandy (cognac)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • additional ground cinnamon
  • optional: cinnamon stick garnish
  1. Step 1

At least an hour ahead of time, plug in the crockpot, and turn it to high. Pour in the quart of eggnog. Stir.

  2. Step 2

Finely grate the peel of a fresh orange. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of it to the eggnog. Stir.

  3. Step 3

Measure out 1 1/2 cups of brandy (cognac). Pour it into the eggnog. Stir. Add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Stir.

  4. Step 4

Put the lid on the crockpot. Turn the heat to low. Stir occasionally. Once the Mexican eggnog is hot, turn the crockpot to "keep warm."

  5. Step 5

If you'd like, you can whip up a little froth in the drink by quickly swishing a wire whisk in the liquid before serving. Scoop it with a ladle into cups or glasses. Sprinkle with cinnamon, and add a cinnamon stick as garnish, if desired.

Title: Over 22,000 people killed in Mexican drug violence since 2006

At least 22,700 people have been killed since President Felipe Calderon took office and deployed troops and Mexican federal police against drug gangs along the U.S. border and in a number of interior cities and states. Estimates until now, compiled by Mexican media and based on crime reports from individual states, had put the death toll at around 18,000. The higher estimates, delivered to senators in a Monday evening meeting, were first reported Tuesday by the Mexico City newspaper Reforma and confirmed by the Associated Press. Gangland violence killed more than 9,600 people nationwide in 2009 and at least 3,300 so far this year, the report said. Ciudad Juarez, bordering El Paso, has by far been the most violent area for drug violence, with more than 4,300 killed in the city of fewer than 1.5 million in the past two years. Other particularly violent states include Sinaloa, Michoacan, Guerrero and Durango, where criminal syndicates are battling for control of smuggling routes and market access to U.S. and Mexican consumers of illegal drugs. Violence also has spiked this year in Morelos state, just south of Mexico City and in the northeastern states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, which border South Texas, amid bloody breaks between former underworld allies.
