Destination: Encantado

por | | 0 comments
I love the way the blog world works. Sometimes it seems so small. I posted earlier today about my favorite destination wedding locations and about an hour later Style Me Pretty posted this gorgeous wedding from one of the locations. Encantado. It's a to-die-for location. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Here's what the bride had to say about the day and the location on SMP:

It was important for Kyle and I to reflect two things: love and family. We wanted an intimate wedding in a romantic, organic place – Santa Fe stole our hearts. Our wedding day was chaotic, yet calm… filled with laughter and genuine emotion. We are the luckiest.
The decor was inspired by our love for succulents, bohemian vintage design and our American Indian/Irish heritage. Kyle and I hand selected everything from the vintage amber jars to the herringbone kitchen towels. Etsy, vintage shopping and DIY projects saved us. We meticulously designed the invitations, ceremony cards and menu cards (with the help of Suann Song of Simple Song Designs). We successfully incorporated our personalities through each piece …”the good stuff” – ceremony programs, “the yummy stuff” – menu cards, “the sweet stuff” – cake table.
Kyle and I met on St. Patty’s Day and coincidentally, our families are both Irish. We chose to reflect this by tying miniature gold four leaf clover charms to the invitations and menu cards. Photos of our grandparents were clipped to the menu cards with a “love” clothespin and American Indian feathers were used for added detail. Buckeye seeds (a good luck charm in American Indian folklore) were hand picked by my grandmother and strewn together in groups of 15, to represent the day Kyle and I met. They were placed on the ceremony programs and kept by guests. The bouquet and reception flowers were inspired by my favorite store, Anthropologie. peaches, creams, purples, yellows, pinks … a true bohemian combination.
The ceremony was intimate and meaningful. Kyle and I stood on an American Indian rug and guests were seated on rustic wooden benches. An acoustic guitar strummed our favorite songs and “five promises” were read to replace traditional vows. A unique feature – our first dance immediately followed the vows. For the reception, guests were seated at a long table covered in a natural linen tablecloth and burlap runner. Vintage amber jars, driftwood, turquoise votives, succulents and chunky flowers decorated the table. The food was home style with a New Mexican twist – steak/halibut, mashed potatoes, green beans, calabacitas, green chile cornbread and pecan pie.

Happy Planning!

The Cake

por | | 0 comments

Yesterday I shared the DIY invitations my friend, Jannah, designed for her sister-in-law. Today I'm sharing the cake. It will absolutely blow your mind. The sweet couple's (Amanda and Raul) friend made it as a gift to them. The bride's mother had the spectacular cake stand created. The detail is incredible and it completely embodies the feel of the day. The very top cake with the lovebirds is the couple's anniversary cake they will celebrate with a year from now. Hands down, my favorite part is the gorgeous, large purple flowers. I even managed to sneak in a picture of the bride and groom.

Congratulations Amanda and Raul! And Happy planning to all the brides-to-be!

Stephanie

Traditions - Mehndi (Henna)

por | | 0 comments

Traditions - Mehndi (Henna)Weddings in India are considered to be a sacred and sanctified ritual. A typical Indian wedding is 3 days long. Pre-celebrations and post celebrations, talk about a party! The Mehndi is one of the most important and fun pre-wedding rituals. Celebrated by the bride, family and her friends. Different regions of the country celebrate the ritual in a different way according to their own marriage customs, rituals, and culture.

Mehndi or Henna itself is eco-friendly. It is a natural tattoo paste, made from the roots of the Henna plant. Green Mehndi is ground to a fine paste. Mehndi is symbolically an important part of the Indian wedding. As Mehndi changes its colour from green to orange-red after application, so does a bride flower into her womanhood after marriage.

Here's a great article from I Love Indian on the Mehndi ceremony.

The ceremony is mostly held at bride's place or sometimes in a banquet hall on the eve of the marriage ceremony or few days before the marriage. On this occasion a professional henna designer or some relative applies mehendi to the bride's hands and feet. There are few places in India where it is a ritual that the first motif of henna or mehendi is applied by the bride's sister-in-law whereas there are some places where the first mehendi motif is said to be auspicious if applied by bride's mother.

The Mehendi or henna motif is not only the adoration of the bride rather it epitomizes her transformation from a virgin girl to a temptress for her husband. As per Kama Sutra, henna is one of the sixty four arts of women. Popular motifs of the bridal mehendi are conchshell, flowers, Kalash, peacock, doli and baraat patterns. The intricate motifs of the bridal henna also hide the husband's name. It is said that the husband's name in the intricate henna motifs is made for the groom who has to find out his name in his bride's mehendi as an evidence of his sharp eyes and active brain to impress his girl.

Mehendi function is usually organized with the sangeet function. So, it has a festive feel to it with the women dancing and singing traditional songs on the mehendi ritual. The bride is dressed in light color clothes with light jewelry. According to the custom the bride must not step out of the house after the mehendi ritual until the wedding day. It is believed that the darker and deeper the henna stains the more the husband and the in-laws will love her bride. The ritual of mehendi signifies the strength and power of love in a marriage so it is regarded good omen for the would-be bride. It is said that the long the bride retains the mehendi, the more auspicious would be her future.

Title: Shri Krishna - Banni Ko Byah (wedding song, bride mehndi)

A wedding song from Ramanand Sagar's epic television series Shri Krishna. The composition and lyrics are by Ravindra Jain, it is sung by Hemlata, and it describes the bridal "shingaar" (makeover) of Lord Krishna's mother Devaki. The song is a good example of the vibrant folk music and wedding traditions of India.

Title: The Invitation

A sequel to last year's "Love Letters." This time Natasha is the star as she tries to come up with the perfect wedding invitation.

We burned this animation onto DVD's and sent it out as our actual wedding invitation. It took nine months to complete, and was produced entirely as part of a group project class at the Art Institute of California - San Francisco where I'm an instructor of animation.

A big thanks to all my students, who did an incredible job (you guys rock!), and to my fellow faculty and staff who've been so supportive.

*Note - To everyone who posted about the date of our wedding: it was on the 30th of June, NOT the 13th. It just looks like thirteenth because of the small size of the video. Oh, and the wedding was this past summer, not the summer of '07. (Not that we wouldn't have LOVED all you YouTubers there.)

Title: Not your average Wedding Invitation

Yeah, so I don't know if you've ever seen one... but most video wedding invitations are massive travesties that make a person cringe so hard that they bleed.

My fiance Becca and I are getting married this December. With the past failures of humanity in mind, we made our own video wedding invitationLess«

Pet Portraits at Roslindale's Pet Cabaret Nov 14 and 21

por | | 0 comments

Join me at the Pet Cabaret in Roslindale on November 14th and 21st for the holiday pet photography event.   I'll be there with Lisa and Lisa and the crew to create a portrait of your pet with your choice of props, like a Charlie Brown-ish Christmas tree and a slippery sled, or we can simply use a white backdrop.  Space is very limited.  The 14th is already full, and there may still be some afternoon spots available on the 21st.  Call the Pet Cabaret (617) 323-7387 for availability.  Here's one of my favorite shots from last year.
